Privacy Policy

Effective November 5, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains what personal information Momochi (“we,” “us”) collects through the Momochi app and website (the “Service”), how we use it, and your rights. It’s meant to be read alongside our Terms of Service.

1. Information we collect

  • Account information: your phone number (verified via our SMS provider, Twilio), and, if you sign in with Google, the name, email, and profile image Google shares with us. We also store the username you choose.
  • Location:your device’s precise location when you scan a menu, used to confirm you’re on site at the restaurant, plus your approximate location (if you allow it) to show nearby restaurants.
  • Photos and content:menu photos you take to contribute a restaurant’s menu, dish photos, ratings, and comments you post, and any report or flag you submit about other users’ content.
  • Usage and device information: basic technical data such as IP address, device/browser type, and how you interact with the Service, for security and to keep it running reliably.

2. How we use your information

  • To create and secure your account and verify you’re a real person.
  • To confirm, via location, that a menu photo was taken on site, which keeps the shared menu accurate.
  • To process menu and dish photos using automated AI systems — for example, transcribing a menu photo into structured items, or generating translations, plain-language explanations, and nutrition estimates.
  • To show you nearby restaurants and the dishes, ratings, and comments on them.
  • To review flagged content, prevent abuse, and enforce our Terms of Service.
  • To communicate with you about your account or material changes to our policies.

3. Who we share it with

We don’t sell your personal information. We share it only with:

  • Service providers who process data on our behalf under contract, including Twilio (SMS phone verification), Supabase (database and file storage), Anthropic (AI processing of menu and dish content), and Google (if you choose Google sign-in).
  • Other users, for the parts of your activity that are public by design: your username, dish photos, ratings, and comments, and any restaurant menu data you help build.
  • Legal and safety purposes, if required by law or necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of Momochi, our users, or the public.

Menu photos themselves are used only to build the structured menu — they are not shown to other users.

4. Where your information is processed

We’re based in Canada, but several of our service providers (including Twilio, Supabase, and Anthropic) process data in the United States or other countries. By using the Service, you understand your information may be transferred to and processed in countries outside your own, which may have different data protection laws than where you live.

5. How long we keep it

We keep your account information and content for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete or anonymize your personal information within a reasonable period, except where we need to retain it to comply with law, resolve disputes, or enforce our agreements. Public content you posted (such as ratings or comments) may remain visible in an anonymized form if other users have interacted with it.

6. Your choices and rights

  • You can access and update most of your account information in the app.
  • You can delete dish photos, ratings, or comments you’ve posted.
  • You can request a copy of your personal information, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete your account, by emailing us (below).
  • You can control location and camera permissions through your device settings at any time; declining them will limit features like menu scanning.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), the GDPR, or the CCPA. Contact us and we’ll do our best to honor applicable requests.

7. Children

Momochi is not directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we’ll remove it.

8. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information. No system is completely secure, so we can’t guarantee absolute security.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we’ll notify you through the Service before they take effect.
